What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
We have a new Discovery Center at our school. For our second class we were asked, “What does Discovery mean?” Discovery means you are asking questions and figuring them out and getting the answers. Discovery means finding something out that you do not know. In the picture on the front of my binder I am finding a pyramid in Egypt. And that is what Discovery means to me.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

In library we decided to review an arcade game, and I choose the game Sphere Runner. Sphere Runner was created by David Carachelo. In Sphere Runner you have to try to get the Sphere Runner over the gray circles without getting hit by the rockets. The Sphere Runner looks like a red and yellow space ship. But you need to make sure that you stay on the grid. And when you fill them all in you move to the next level. The rules to Sphere Runner are placed under the game. Out of four stars the level of difficulty is two or three stars. To win the game you must complete all of the levels. When you win the game they congratulate you on the screen and you get to start all over again.

The materials I think I would need to make this game 3D is cardboard, tape, poster board, glue, and scrapbooking paper. To make this game I think it would cost $10. However, to buy this game I think it would cost $5.

The game I chose was Sphere Runner and you can find it at the URL address:

Design Brief

What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?

The name of our Crusie Arcade game that we created is called The School Box. You play the game by getting the ball through the tunnels in the “School Box” and getting the ball out by taking the right path. The rules of the game are displayed above the back of the “School Box”. We would say that the level of difficulty out of 1-4 rating system is a 4. To win you have to get the ball out safely and without it falling. If you win you get a prize.

In our blueprint we drew our game in orthographic design. An orthographic design is a drawing that shows front, side, and top. Our design in the drawing shows a giant pull out drawer from a desk. Our giant pull out drawer is like a maze inside a box.

The materials we need to build the game are a big cardboard box, duct tape, old toys, cups, and school supplies. We think it would take around 5 weeks to finish the game. The problems that we foresee are: what if the ball stops while somebody is playing, what if people steal the prizes when we are not there, and what if people disrespect our game?

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Mrs. Koska

Date: 2/25/13

Praise: I like the idea of the drawer. Love the ball. It was very creative.

Question: How did you get the idea?

Polish: Make some kind obstacles for the ball to go through

Student Comment: Thank you, we work really hard on our game, and it all paid off. We got the idea from a mechanical pencil; it broke and when you pushed the eraser it was like a releaser on a marble game. We were going to make an obstacle but we ran out of time.

Examiners: Mrs. Horst

Date: 1/13/13

Praise: I like how you were flexible with your plans and revamp your design and alter your blueprint. Very creative game! You clearly marked your directions and wheels.

Question: Do your players get to choose their prizes?

Polish: Work on your ramp so that it is not tilted toward win. You may want to add a label to the win side.

Student Comment: Thank you, our game, The School Box, has had a lot of work but it all worked out. Our players get to choose their prizes. Thanks, we took your advice and fixed the ramp so it is even. We have labeled the win and lose side, and it looks a lot better.

Examiner: Mrs. Bair and Mrs. Ferrens

Date: 2/7/13

Praise: Attractive design well thought out concept!

Question: How did the design of the ball impact the outcome each time?

Polish: Could you make the path longer using multiple boxes? What If you used a closed up tube instead of open ones?

Student Comment: Thank you for the kind comment about our game, The School Box. Hope you had lots of fun! The ball had more of an octagon kind of shape. We tried closing the tubes but we had some time trouble. Yes, we could make the game bigger but we probably needed a week or two extra.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project
What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

We could have made some obstacles.

Specifically, how would we do this?

Cut pieces of paper to be blockers.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

How to compromise in a way everybody wins.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I didn’t know about Caine’s arcade game that was created in California.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?

Use the PBL process which makes the project a lot easier.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

Working with a team to complete our goal to make an arcade game.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

We could have had more time to really upgrade our Crusie Arcade Game.

A Final Reflection:

If I had more time to add on to my Crusie Arcade Game, The School Box, I would definitely add obstacles and make it way bigger. I would cut pieces of paper and glue the pieces on to the game tunnels. During this Crusie Arcade Game process, I learned how to compromise and make sure everybody gets what they want. To make my game it took team work. Lucky for me I had Lily to help me. We followed the PBL process which helps you not get mixed up. Working as a team to complete the goal of building an arcade game was a lot of fun. Even though I would have wished for more time we got it done and it looked great. We also could have had more boxes and cardboard to make it bigger but we ran out of time. Lily and I had a great time and wish we could do it all the time in Discovery Center.
